Life Technologies to Hire 100 People Next Fiscal in India

New Delhi: U.S.-based biotechnology firm Life Technologies today said it will hire up to 100 people in India by the end of next fiscal and also plans to set up a manufacturing facility. "We will add up to 100 people by the end of next fiscal. They will be scientists and technical support specialists," Life Technologies South Asia Manging Director Devashish Ohri told PTI. He was speaking on the sidelines of an event to introduce a new human genome sequencing equipment 'Ion Proton Sequencer'. Asked about planned investments in India, he said: "We could invest up to $ 2 to 3 million to set up the manufacturing facility in Delhi." The firm has already ramped up its research laboratory in Delhi, he added. The company is looking to tap the potential of genome sequencing that has been gaining popularity globally. "We think that clinical use of sequencing will be $ 2 billion by 2015," Life Technologies Chairman and CEO Greg Lucier said. The company's Ion Proton Sequencer can give the sequence of human genome at a cost of Rs 50,000 in two hours. This will be a front line test that will be used in treatment of cancer by 2015, he added. "It can be also used for medical treatment, in the field of bio-agriculture and in energy research. Just six months after our semiconductor sequencing chip was released, people used it solve the German E Coli outbreak, sequencing the toxic strain in just a couple of hours," Lucier said. Globally, Life Technologies employs about 10,400 people and the company had sales of $ 3.7 billion in 2011.
