Kuldip Singh named new CMD of MTNL

New Delhi: Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) has appointed Kuldip Singh as the new Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the state-run telecommunications company. Singh has been given the charge for a period of three months. Singh's appointment came after his predecessor R S P Sinha's tenure ended on January 9, this year. Singh would continue to hold the portfolio of director (technical). When contacted, he confirmed receipt of an official communication in this regard. MTNL has continued to expand its footprints and make new offerings to maintain its leadership in telecom service space. The PSU has a customer base of over 8.2 million, including about 4.4 million GSM mobile connections. However, the company has been facing severe pressure on its financials and had announced near 80 percent decline in net profit for the second quarter ended September, 2009 and stood at 20.58 crore compared to 91.49 crore in the same period in 2008.
