July-December Quarter Produced A Spike of 118 pct in Jobs: Survey
BANGALORE: Our nation is one of the youngest, globally and 54 percent of the population is under 25 years of age. Young talent in the county struggles to get employed and a mere 5 percent of the total employable population receives skill training to be eligible for jobs. However, the Modi Government’s maneuvers like ‘Make in India’ and ‘Skill India’ have bore sweet fruits for the prevailing employment status of India, reports ET.
Reportedly, the number of jobs for the period from July to December, 2014 increased almost twofold in comparison to last year. A survey undertaken by the labour ministry unveiled that eight prime sectors of the economy witnessed 2.75 lakh new jobs in this period. This marks an increment of 118 percent in regard to last year’s 1.26 lakh jobs.
Conversely, the quarter of October- December generated 1.17 lakh jobs which was less in comparison to 1.58 lakh jobs generated in the preceding quarter.
Gaining momentum in job creation is one of the featured points in Modi government’s economic agenda that was disclosed days later BJP started functioning. Make In India is one of the prime programs of the government and is dedicated to generate jobs and enhance skills in 25 key sectors of Indian economy. Moreover, a ministry to develop skills is to be set up by BJP government that would aim on training the young talent and make them industry ready.
Rituparna Chakraborty, president, Indian Staffing Federation, said, "There is certainly an upswing in the number of jobs created in the country. But that is largely because of improvement in sentiments and the huge optimism around the initiatives of the new government. However, the real test is now and it is time that the government actually took steps to execute some of its labor related initiatives so as to sustain the momentum,"
The labour ministry released the 24th quarterly survey that enveloped 2,077 sample units from the eight prime sectors comprising of apparels, IT/BPO, metals, automobiles, transport, handloom/power-loom,leather, gems & jewellery. IT/BPOs led generating the greatest number of jobs followed by the sectors of textile and apparels and leather.
"While employment of direct workers went up by 1.01 lakh, hiring of contract workers was up by 16,000 during the quarter ended December, 2014 and a significant portion of the workforce were employed in units catering to the domestic market with employment in non-exporting units higher by 82,000 while number of people employed in exporting units up by 35,000 during the October-December quarter," the survey said.
BJP’s government had generated 59.9 million jobs when the party exercised power from 1998-2004 whereas the period from 2004-05 and 2009-10 witnessed merely 1.1million new jobs. 13.9 million jobs were produced for the duration of 2009-10 and 2011-12.
