JAIPUR: A group of five engineering students of Jaipur National University (JNU) won special recognition and best performance awards at NASA for their innovative four-wheeler that can run on the moon. The group had presented their model at the NASA space flight centre Huntsvilla in Alabama in the US recently. The team comprises Janki Soni, Parteek Sharma, Monark Sharma, Shivani and Ankita. The vehicle named Moon Baghi' is capable of running on 1/6th of the gravitational force on the surface of moon. Special steering and shock absorbing system are the highlight features of this vehicle. The steering can turn 360 degrees with manoeuvring handle up to 15 degrees. The team has used oil tube shockers that can remain stable even on 30 degrees, capable of traversing on rugged terrain on the moon. "The tubeless tyres are meant to suit the moon's atmosphere," said Monark Sharma, a team member. This project was the outcome of an year of hard work and technical assistance from their professors. The students won a cash prize of $400 (Rs 20,000 approx) to further develop their project. NASA had invited applications from across the world for making a 4-wheeler, human power driven compatible vehicle for its astronauts to cover large space on moon's surface. This six-member team is the first from the state to be selected to participate in this competition. The project was developed at a cost of nearly Rs 80,000. Source: Times of India
