IT Jobs to Remain Stable Till 2020; WEF Study

BENGALURU: The report from World Economic Forum (WEF) suggests that information technology (IT) sector will likely to remain stable till 2020. The report also says that the demand for IT job might decline because of the changes in the hiring patterns as there are strong recruitment trends expected for data analytics and cloud computing, reports BS.

Following that there is some good news for employees in India as demand for IT jobs is set to remain stable in the country along with other emerging markets as we are still in process of adopting digital technologies. With that said there is also some bad news as report also expects a decline in traditional IT jobs by 0.38 percent annually over 2015-2020 in India.

On the Global front about 5.1 million jobs could be lost between 2015 and 2020, due to the new trends that include rapid mobile internet growth and technology adoption. Strong employment growth will continue to drive in computer and mathematical jobs, covering both traditional IT work and disruptive digital technology where it will be driven by trends beyond technology.   Job families such as office and administrative roles are set to see a decline.

Major India IT outsourcing companies such as Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys and Wipro are training a significant portion of their total employee strength for digital technology services, as the companies believe that digital technology contributes over a tenth of their total revenue.

“In fact, employment growth for computer and mathematical roles is expected to be least pronounced in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector itself, hinting at the accelerated demand for data analysis skills and ICT literacy across, and uptake of these tools by, other industries such as media and entertainment,” it said in the report.

“The office and administrative job category is expected to be negatively affected by a perfect storm of technological trends that have the potential to make many of them redundant, such as mobile internet and cloud technology, data analytics and the internet of things, “ it said.
