6. Software Developers: Software developers are responsible for design, installation, testing and maintenance of software systems in the organization. The BLS report highlighted that 913,100 software developers were working in the U.S. in 2010 who were earning a median wage of $90,530. The BLS predicts that in 2020, number of software development jobs will increase by 30 percent, or 270,900. The bureau highlighted that the fastest growth rate (32 percent) will be for system software developers, and the lowest rate (28 percent) will be application developers.

7. Other IT occupations: There were 347,200 network and computer systems administrators working in the United States, during 2010. They earned a median wage of $69,160. By 2020 employment in these occupations is anticipated to grow 28 percent, or 96,600 jobs. Web developers and computer network architects are put in a single category, which together employed 302,300 professionals in 2010 and are expected to grow by 22 percent to 367,900 by 2020. The median wage for all employees in this category was $75,660.
