Is Indian higher education stress free?

Bangalore: Believe it or not the severe anxiety and depression among the Indian students allow them to use their own science labs to create drugs. The number of students using chemicals and salts available in their school or college labs to develop drugs and satisfy themselves is increasing day by day. Exam stress isn't a particularly new phenomenon on the Indian academic landscape. Cases of depression and the stray suicide case have been common for many years. The inadequacy of the social and educational environment in the country can be said as the major reason. Researches shows bring out the fact that there are different types of role stresses present among the engineering and management students in India. The findings reveal that students are experiencing role overload, role stagnation and self-role distance. Male students experience higher levels of role stagnation than female students. Recently, CBSE India accepted that the Indian education is stressful and taken various initiatives to bring about meaningful changes in the current education scenario. Followed by CBSE now, IIT coaching centers are also looking to de-stress kids. Praveen Tyagi, Managing Director of IITians' Pace said, "Our research cell has shown that replacing ranks with grades will lift the overall performance of the batch. Hence, we've moved away from the ranking system to the grading method. Some accept change well and for some it's uneasy." Parents and the education administrators add unnecessary 'stress' to children aspiring to pursue professional programs. It is also noticed that the student stress levels climb up in the final years of school and peak as they go through multiple admission tests. Even the Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal also understood the need of the hour and requested the policy makers to change the education scenario stress free. Some degree of stress is helpful for individuals in meeting the new challenges, but persistently high and unrelieved stress can lead to psychological, physical and behavioral ill health. Parents and academicians think that current phenomena allow students to work harder, to set higher challenges. "Stress among aspirants is rising and it's an issue of concern," said Narendra Bambwani, owner of Reliable Classes and the Secretary of Maharashtra Coaching Classes Owners' Association. All these shows that our policy makers are aware about it and understand the urgency to 'de-stress' young Indians, Will they be able to produce a system that encourages innovation creativity? That is something we have to wait and watch.
