Karnataka has two entries in the top ten. Bangalore based, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and the city’s very own Bangalore University are the two varsities representing the state. With about 560 and 687 colleges, they are slotted at tenth and sixth positions in the list.

Most experts in the country are with a view that affiliated colleges, which are the corner-stone of Indian higher education system, is doing more harm than good. They believe that the universities are stretched beyond their capacity and in the process, they are struggling to provide quality education. Be it the National Commission, the Yashpal panel or the higher education revival commission set up by Maharashtra government assert that the best way to review the Indian education system is to break up the universities into smaller clusters of colleges, which can be easier to govern.
