Indians Form 2nd Largest Group Of International Students In U.S.
WASHINGTON: As many as 113,813 Indian students are currently enrolled in various U.S. universities and educational institutions, accounting for second largest number of international students in America, a latest official report said today.
According to the report released by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), India accounts for second largest number of international students in this country. China with 290,133 students is at the top in the report on international students.
Over three-fourths of Indian students are enrolled in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) courses.
India, in fact, has the highest number of STEM students. As many as 78 percent of the Indian students are enrolled in STEM categories, while the figure for China is 37 percent, said the report which is based on data from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
The SEVIS is a Web-based system that includes information on international students, exchange visitors and their dependents while they are in the United States.
The report accounts for figures till April 1 this year.
There are currently 1,015,178 students studying in the U.S. and 188,382 J-1 exchange visitors. And with the dependents the grand total is 2,102,565.
As many as 29 per cent of the international students (who get F and M categories of students' visa originate from China and 56 percent of all international students in the country are males, the report said.
