Indians far behind Chinese for education in U.S.
Mumbai: When it comes to university education, Indian students are far behind their peers in China. India has only seen one percent increase in the number of applications in 2010 for the academic year beginning from September 2010. On the other hand, China has seen a 20 percent increase in the enrollment rate, reports Kalpana Pathak from Business Standard. According to the latest CGS International Graduate Admissions Survey, India had faced a decline in 12 percent in 2009. "For India, this is the third consecutive year of declines in offers of admission, yet 2009 was the only year in which applications decreased," the survey said. Compared to that, there was a 20 per cent increase in graduate applications from China, was up from a 14 per cent gain in 2009-the fifth consecutive year of double-digit growth for Beijing. There seems to be a slow down in enrolment in leading U.S. institutions as a lot of Indian students are still dependent on scholarship schemes. US-based education analyst Rahul Choudaha says admission offers to Indian students are decreasing as compared to the increasing rate of applications made by Indian students. "Endowments to many of these universities have come down and so has the total amount available for disbursement towards scholarships or assistantships. This would certainly impact the volume of subsidies these universities are able to offer," said a Mumbai-based education consultant.
