BANGALORE: Online courses were not at all considered as prominent programs some years back, as it never gave that transparency like the traditional courses did. However, the scenario has changed and surprisingly India is the forefront of this change. The fact that the country is second only to U.S. in terms of enrolment to E-courses offered by MIT is a clear indication of the same, reports the Times of India.

According to e-courses conducted on edX, the enormous open online course platform founded by Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University, over 2.5 lakh Indians have registered under this course platform, which makes Indians the second largest community, after Americans, to opt for these online courses.

The E-courses have been well designed and are led by some top professors in the world. Students who are taking up these programs require just internet access and the courses will be delivered through it free of cost. The courses can be completed within a duration of 4 to 12 weeks, and those who complete them will receive a certificate from the university that offers the course. A total of 2 million people from 196 countries have registered for edX courses, of which about 6 lakh are from the U.S. followed by UK and Brazil with 80,000 each and about 60,000 from China.

When it comes to Indians, the most popular courses opted are those related to computer science, engineering, and public health. Globally and for Indians, the most popular course is 'Introduction to computer science', led by Harvard faculty David J Malan and Rob Bowden, and the circuits and electronics course led by MIT professor Anant Agarwal .

"Some 2.2 lakh people are currently registered for the introduction to computer science course, and some 3.6 lakh have registered for this course in the past two years. The circuits and electronics course has had a total of 2.5 lakh students since it started. About 12 percent of the students in both courses are from India," exclaimed Anant Agarwal.
