Indian women still lag behind in advancement and compensation
Bangalore: Besides all the reservations and the considerations that the Indian society is providing to support to the women to come to the forefront has still reached nowhere. Survey shows that the Indian women are six times less likely than women elsewhere to make it to the very top of companies or even get bigger pay packets than men. Chartered Institute of Management Accounts (CIMA), the professional body of accountants, says Indian women, as indeed women elsewhere in Asia, lag behind men in advancement and compensation from the very start of their career. After several years of work experience the situation remains the same. "This is primarily because of Indian women cannot pay concentration into one thing alone since they have lot of responsibilities besides a profession," said Asita Bali, a Bangalorean techie. If you look at our neighboring countries or the other emerging countries the role of women have drastically changed. Bangladesh's Grameen Bank has inspired many micro-credit units around the world. Apart from starting small businesses, women in Bengladesh were able to bring change to their lives and the community around them. If you come back to the Indian scenario, there are lots of initiatives taken by the government as well as private firms to support them to come to the top level management. The state governments have enhanced the quota for women in panchayats from 33 percent to 50 percent to bring out women leadership. Even Nasscom the IT and BPO industry body has favored a flexible work atmosphere for women, who are engaged in raising their family. Beside all these what makes the Indian women to lag behind? Women entrepreneurs are becoming an increasingly important component of the world economy. And thus create a need for the Indian women to wake up, seek support, raise profile and get organized.
