BANGALORE: After India’s one of the oldest universities, Panjab University makes a debut by coming up at the 226^th rank in the Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings in 2013; many Indian universities are now vying for such prestigious international ranking, reports Business Standard.
Until 2013, PU was contented with its achievement but after backing this ranking from ‘THE’ magazine, it achieved another height by beating the topmost university in India like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). It also ranked 32^nd, the top from India on Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings this year.
Lalit Bansal, chairman, Panjab University exclaimed, "Till last year, we were not extensively exposed to the idea of rankings. But our vice-chancellor decided that we participate. The rankings, though unsolicited, have helped us analyze our strength and weaknesses," reports BS.
Of-late, most of the prestigious Indian universities, including the IITs, revealed that the ranking exercise has become an essential element especially for a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis.
Prof B N Jain, Vice-Chancellor, BITS Pilani said, "While participating in the ranking exercise, we wanted to subject ourselves to examination by a third party and thereby find out the areas we are strong in and the areas we lag. We are using this as a bench-marking exercise."
