The Cambridge-based EdX is governed by MIT and Harvard. The two institutes had pooled in $60 million to begin this online platform last year. The specialty of edX is that is open to all and free of cost.

In June of 2013, IIT Bombay partnered with edX. In regard to this, Agarwal added that the platform will now strike into corporates to achieve more funds.

“EdX recently welcomed IIT Bombay to our X consortium. Joining the X consortium enables IIT Bombay to develop next-generation online and blended learning courses, as well as fill a specific professional development need in India: Training engineering teachers,” said Agarwal.

With a huge number of students enrolling for engineering colleges in the country, IIT Bombay will make use of edX’s open source platform to amplify the number of qualified and experienced engineering professors in India and abroad. On participating in edX course, students would receive a certificate of participation made available through one of its institutions.

 “Today, the certificates of achievement are free. This may change in the future to help cover our costs. Going ahead, the certificate might be charged but the course will continue to be free,” Agarwal said.
