New Delhi: Noting that India has got the unique opportunity to emerge as a global leader in science and technology, Union Minister Ashwini Kumar today said the country needs to look beyond existing centres of excellence such as the IITs and think bigger to achieve its targets.
Kumar, who is the Minister for Science and Technology, said the Vision-2020 to bring India into the elite club of developed nations is now "realizable" and the country is very close to becoming a world leader in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
"India has got the unique opportunity to emerge a global leader... The world market is vast, fast growing and complex. We have to explore opportunities in areas of energy, material, nano, water and neuro sciences to make ourselves the world leaders," he said.
Kumar was addressing a gathering of scientists on the occasion of 25th foundation day of Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC).
Former President A P J Abdul Kalam was the chief guest of the programme where he conferred eight national awards for commercializable patents selected by TIFAC.
Stressing on the need to create more centre for excellence in the country, the Minister said, "We have to move further of the IITs. IITs have made us proud and now we have to think bigger. We have many targets to achieve and we need to think out of the that frame of mind."
India is going to become a universally recognized regional and strategic power with the help of its achievements in the field of science and technology, he said.
