India Rated Among The Most Overworked And Vacation-Deprived Nations

Bangalore: India, the second most populous country in the world, has emerged as the nation with the second highest number of overworked masses after Hong Kong where its people work 44 hours a week. According to a survey conducted by global travel agency Expedia Inc., most of the Indians dedicated 42 hours a week on an average for their work, reports Moulishree Srivastava for Wall Street Journal.
India is also known as the 10th most vacation-deprived country as its people hardly takes off to be in good terms with their higher authority and they preferred monetary compensation in exchange for unused leaves. However, 63 percent of respondents feel they does not get enough vacation, says the report.
The survey said, “Indians are second, behind Thailand (22 percent), in not taking leaves to be in boss’s good books, while 18 percent of Indians don’t use all the leaves because they fear that taking all of the vacation time will be perceived negatively by their employer,” reports WST.
“Ninety four percent Indians at least sometimes check work email even on vacation, which is the highest in the world, followed by France (9 percent), Thailand (92 percent, Malaysia (91 percent) and Mexico (91 percent),” added the survey.
Vikram Malhi, general manager, South and Southeast Asia, Expedia India asserted, “In India, people still lag behind when it comes to completely letting go during their vacation. Not just this, even during regular days, Indians work for more hours than other countries with 38 percent people working for 41-50 hours a week. This shows the need for a better work-life balance,” reports WST.
Expedia Inc conducted the online survey between August and September, in which 8,535 respondents from 24 countries took part.
