IIT vs Government, Students Suffers
Bangalore: After IIT-Kanpur, rejected the HRD Minister Kapil Sibal’s proposal on ‘one nation, one test’ for all centrally funded engineering institutions and decided to conduct its own entrance test for the under graduate programs from 2013, it is now IIT-Delhi which has joined hands with IIT-Kanpur’s decision to conduct their own entrance examinations, reports Um-e-Kulsoom on NDTV website.
The IIT-Delhi’s senate comprising of 200 faculty members collectively rejected Kapil Sibal’s proposal. Sanajeev Sanghi, the Senate member and the President of the IIT faculty forum said that, as all the senate members have collectively rejected the HRD minister’s proposal, we will stick on to the current entrance exam format and from 2014 we will be having our own entrance examinations format just like IIT-Kanpur.
Some of the sources have informed NDTV that, just like IIT-Delhi and IIT-Kanpur’s decision, even the IIT Bombay as well as IIT Kharagpur, are also planning to follow the same way of IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur to conduct their own entrance exams. The IIT-Bombay is likely to hold their senate meeting on July 6th 2012.
This decision from the IIT-Delhi has come out in the midst of talks between them and the HRD ministry. The Prime Minister has been said to have conveyed to the Ministry that the autonomy of all the IITs will be supported.
So, the decision from two of the major IITs will be affecting the students as they will have to write one more examination. This decision from IIT-Delhi has strengthened IIT Kanpur’s decision of conducting own entrance exams.
When you look at the proposal by the HRD ministry, their main intention was to introduce a single entrance test for all the centrally funded engineering institutions that included NITs and IIITs as well. Their intention was also to reduce the stress on the students and make the examination more broad by including the board exam. But all their intentions have ended up raising a storm over the attrition of IITs’ autonomy, reports Himanshi Dhawan on The Times of India.
However, the clash between the IITs and HRD ministry seems to have negatively affected the students who are willing to join the IITs after their Class 12. Swati, who is a worried student, preparing for the IIT JEE, reported to the NDTV that, she is confused on how to react to this decision taken by the IITs, as each of the IITs will have their own entrance examination. She also said that at the end, it is the students who have to prepare many tests to get admitted to the IITs. Another student has complained that this decision has put them into double stress.
