IIT Roorkee Launches Design Innovation Centre (DIC) Navonmesh

Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee recently inaugurated Design Innovation Centre (DIC) named (Navonmesh) with a project outlay of 10 crores funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. The newly launched centre will be aimed at addressing issues of the Himalayan Region using available resources as well as cater to National Priorities.

Prof. Ajit K Chaturvedi, Director, IIT- Roorkee, says, “The technical/non-technical colleges/institutes and schools can involve themselves in mentoring and supporting innovation and design activities, to address general issues & issues specific to the Himalayan region. This will also help Indian Farmers and develop innovative means & ways to enhance their growth & productivity”. The centre will usher in a new culture among the stakeholders of the state to address the difficulties faced by the common people in their daily life. The emphasis is on the development of a design culture and interdisciplinary work. All infrastructural support will be provided to the centre to make it one of the leading centres.

The center’s main purpose is to develop innovative designs and region-specific products to improve the quality of life. It also produces ‘green furniture’ using the forest wastes, which will minimize the hazards due to the forest fire, advanced crop harvester to make the life easy for the farmers, advanced loom make which increases the productivity of the local weavers and many more. IIT Roorkee has already has an ecosystem in place of terms of well-established Tinkering Lab, a technology incubation center and a mechanism for securing the properties that supports the design center’s activities. DIC will also provide study programmes such as Minor specialization on Innovation Management and Product Design, Modular programmes, Elective Courses in UG/PG programmes, Masters Programmes on Industry Design and Innovation Management.

Prof. PVM Rao, Head of the Department of Design, IIT Delhi, says, “I have full confidence on IIT Roorkee for accomplishing the targeted tasks. I am happy about the unique programs targeted by Design Innovation Centre at IIT Roorkee. A centre of design would make tools and technology accessible to make human life easier while solving many environment-related problems.”

IIT Roorkee is an institute of national importance in imparting higher education in engineering, sciences, management architecture and planning. It has been ranked 3rd among the IITs by the Times higher Education Asia University Rankings and has played a vital role in providing technical manpower to the country.
