IIM-A Attracts High Number Of Disabled Students
BANGALORE: The most sought after management institute of the country, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, has a beautifully designed campus adding to its fervor. Currently pledging to support the differently abled students on its campus, IIM-A has taken up renovation activities on its campus in order to extend full support to them.
The institute sees a large number of intake of differently abled students, and thus the process of smoothening the rough edges, and creating ramps and railings are in process; reports, The Times of India.
"For easy access, new elevators have been installed including at the underpass that connects the new campus with the old. Elevators will be shortly installed for reaching classrooms. Two ramps per classroom have been built that take students directly into the class," said Manoj Bhatt, chief administrative officer at IIM-A.
In 2001, IIM-A set up Equal Opportunity Office to be at par with providing equal opportunities to students in commuting around the campus and feel better without being disguised at any level. The authorities heeded to the requirements of the differently abled students, and in future, they plan to introduce braille for the visually impaired students.
These facilities in the IIM-A campus will set an example for other universities and work places to provide equal opportunities to such students. This initiative will spur more developments like this in future.
However, in the current scenario, the infrastructure and facilities designed to help the differently abled are yet to be undertaken across the country and are less prevalent. The government should ensure that the upcoming projects take the differently abled people into consideration and provide a more comfortable environment, supporting their progress.
