Government Panel to Review Yoga as Discipline for Sports Quota Jobs

NEW DELHI: The central government has decided to form a committee which will review its recruitment process through sports quota where one of the issues will be reviewing whether yoga can be included as a discipline.

The second point in the terms of reference for the committee states: "To consider inclusion of yoga in the list of sports disciplines."

The first point in the terms of reference includes reviewing of the sports disciplines qualifying for recruitment.

Another important aspect is whether the percentage of sports quota recruitment for central government, which is now capped at maximum five percent, can be made minimum five percent.

Another important issue that will be reviewed is whether those sports persons win medals at big ticket events like Olympics, World Championships, Asian Games and CWG can be promoted to group A and B in central government jobs.

According to a circular issued by Rakesh Moza, Under Secretary (Ministry of Personal, Public Grievances and Pensions, Department of Personnel & Training), the committee will comprise the following: ist Secretary (DOPT) as convener along with its Secretaries from Sports, AYUSH, SAI, Officers associated with employment of sportspersons from ministries of Defence, Railways, Revenue, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Home Affairs.
