Global Universities Can Independently Set Up Campuses In India

The landmark rule now allows the top 400 global institutions that figure among world university rankings published by the Times Higher Education, Quacquarelli Symonds, or Shanghai Jiao Tong University, to set up campuses as not-for-profit organizations under the Companies Act. They will be eligible if they are not-for-profit legal bodies that are at least 20 years old and are recognized by an authorized agency of the home country or by an internationally accepted system of accreditation.
The new law permits foreign players to offer programmes or courses that are in line with the quality offered to those on their main campuses and awarded majors will be considered as foreign degrees.
In the words of A Didar Singh, secretary general, Ficci "The move by the government to open entry to quality foreign education providers is indeed a welcome step to meet the country's demand for higher education. However, the approach to restrict foreign education providers, based on world rankings, may not be appropriate", as reported by the Economic Times.
