Flipkart's New Maternity Policy Lures Women Employees with 6 Month Paid Leave

BANGALORE: Women are holding a significant portion of the workforce today. Despite the increased innovation, high salaries, diverse working condition, companies are failing to retain their women leaders.

In the light of this, Indian e-commerce giant, Flipkart, has adopted a new strategy to retain its women employees.  The Bengaluru-based startup is offering six months of paid maternity leave along with four months at work with flexible working hours with full pay, more so a year’s non-paid time out if required, reports ET.

The benefits for the women employees have been revised which now offers pregnant employees with a transport reimbursement benefit of Rs 600 per day for the two months before the delivery. In addition to this, pregnant employees will also enjoy reserved parking slots for 2 months before and after delivery of the child. Flipkart is also making an attempt to bear half of the day care charges for the children, parenting counseling, maternity tie-ups with nursing homes and insurance benefits.

Deepali Tamhane, senior director, product management, Flipkart, said, "Flipkart needs to be able to attract more women talent, big growth is happening in e-commerce in women's segment. In India we are at the cusp of that. The sooner the company gets prepared for that we will have a very strong position in keeping our leadership slot,"

This all new maternity benefit program might attract women employees to Flipkart making it a preferred choice among women tech professionals.

The company also looks forward to adding more women employees joining the bandwagon of companies that want to retain their female professionals in leadership roles.

Banks and telcos are also supporting the trend with new women-centric benefits. However Flipkart’s package of benefits looks more tempting for new mothers.

Saundarya Rajesh, founder and president at Avtar Career Creators & FLEXI Careers India, said, "An Indian company making sure that women talent are given the support they deserve during the most vulnerable period of childbirth and childcare is really one of its kind."

Rajesh also added that 48 percent of the women workforce abandons their jobs for pursuing motherhood. Replacement is however looks a costlier option to the companies.

"Such a unique maternity policy can cut attrition by 20-30% of women and can lead to significant cost saving for the company," he added.
