Bangalore: A survey by National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) reveals that there is a decline in the total labor workforce rate, especially a six percentage point drop for women since 2004-05. The number is alarming and it shows that fewer women want to work, hence increasing the dependency ratio.
The sample survey organization was done for the year 2009-10.The fact that came into limelight from the survey was a fall in the total number of labor force employment rate. There was a 29.4 percent to 23.3 percent fall in the number of woman labor. There is also a fall in the per capita income as only 40 percent of the total labor force was available for employment in 2009- 10.
The possible reason behind the fall in the number, is the increase in the salary of the male members in the family and the fact that woman are getting more educated and they are concentrating on bagging better opportunities. It is also assumed that woman in the age group of 15-24 years are opting for more education and training therefore are not willing to work.
