Counter-Offer a Past Tool; Most Firms Fail To Hold Back Employees: Study
BENGALURU: Companies promising counter-offers are holding back its employees. Employees who accept it are not satisfied with the results as the organizations are failing to keep-up their promises, reports Times of India.
A study recently conducted by Antal International revealed that almost 60 per cent of the people surveyed never got the hike in their pay as promised, 82 per cent of people who were promised a promotion continue to serve with the same designation even after a year. Employees of 70 per cent and above who were promised a change in the scope of their role too are still working in the same assigned job.
The study further shows that 55 per cent of the people reported their unhappiness towards the job, decreased levels of commitment to the job and are in search for new job. 65 per cent of respondents have commented that they will never consider a counter-offer again.
The prime reason why counter-offers have failed to work, according to Mayank Chandra, managing partner, Antal International, is the condition under which the counter-offer was made and the psychology surrounding it. "Most times, when the counter-offer promise is made, it is usually under a dire, almost desperate condition: An employee has walked in with resignation in hand. Immediately the knee jerk reaction sets in and justifications are found to strengthen the need for a counter-offer. However, as soon as the candidate accepts the counter-offer and stays back, the employer invariably begins to consider the candidate as dispensable," said Chandra.
