Check How Being Selfish Could Help You Climb the Career Ladder

1. The Work One Does At Workplace:

Some people carry out tasks that weren’t part of their job description, without realizing that in most cases such ‘different’ tasks can have a negative impact on the future job promotion in their core competency. This is because that particular individual was spending his valuable time to carry out a task that was outside his purview.

Be selfish, stand up to yourself and say NO in such situations.

2. How Much You Get Paid:

Unless you take the initiative and walk the extra mile with regards to your pay packages, chances are that you get paid less with respect to the industry standards.

Pull up your socks and take an active role in negotiating your salary. Be prepared and back up your candidature with regards to a salary hike.

Do bear in mind that the stronger your case, healthier your chances of bagging a pay hike and it is actually up to you to push your case and timeline.

3. Who You Work For:

Depending on the size of the employer you are associated with, at times you may have a choice to choose the manager. But the issue here is that probably nobody ever informs you about such opportunities and being in a bad group or working under a bad manager can have severe repercussions on your long-term career. And your manager will never inform you about such lateral moves, because he needs you to work in his group.

It is better to request for a transfer in such cases, especially if you like your employer and the ideal time to switch groups is when a big project is nearly completed or has ended.

Be assertive, choose the group you want be associated with and approach the higher authorities in a professional manner.
