Changing Trends At IITs: Number Of Girls On An All Time High
BANGALORE: As per the recent reports by Times of India it is evident that there is a changing trend in the number of girl’s entries in to IITs. Although the numbers are a few and very less as compared with the opposite gender, it is been reported as there is a growth from 8 percent last year to 9 percent in the current batch.
Out of a total of 9,974 students who were allotted seats in 18 IITs in the country it is estimated that there are only 900 girls. 11percent of girl population was qualified for the IIT admissions this year but only lucky 900 of them made the cut. If we talk about the number of registrations for the entrance examinations the rates are going in a high graph.
The college professors comments that the less number of girls in the IITs are mainly because of the mindsets of people who thinks that girls can’t be like boys. Director of IIT-Roorkee Pradipta Banerji said that even though the girls excel in studies the participation is limited under graduation programmes. She also added that "There are not many girls taking the JEE (Main), so we get fewer students for JEE (Advanced). But at the postgraduate level, we have more women on the campus. In fact, 44 percent doctorate students on the Roorkee campus are women. Of the total student population, they constitute around 15percent,”
With the current figures we could see a changing trend in the country with more participation of girls in such joint entrance exams.
