Pune: At a time when everything around you talks technology, the cadets at the National Defense Academy (NDA) in Pune are also joining the tech bandwagon. Starting the next academic session in NDA is e-learning through mobile thin clients - a type of high speed laptops, reports Prasad Kulkarni of the Times News Network.
A mobile thin client is a mobile computer just like the laptops. It is of high speed and a number of thin clients can be operated with one centrally installed server. All applications related to a work will be loaded in the system that can be availed by the users of the thin client.
These clients will not just impart lessons to the cadets, but also information like examination routines will be shared through them. Major Bhagirath Dey, Public Relations Officer, NDA said on the new system, "The NDA has undertaken a major drive to expose cadets to the new revolution in the IT field. The introduction of these clients will be a part of this drive. This is a milestone in modernizing the educational system of the academy."
The academy is also planning to start a Geographical Information System (GIS) laboratory in the geography department. The cadets can also access the same in their clients.
NDA is set to get around 2,100 clients for the new batch to be started in January, 2011. The cadets can procure education material via these clients round the clock.
Col. Gautam Bhandari, Director Training, NDA said, "Since the notes will be available on the clients, cadets can concentrate only on listing. The effort of jotting down notes will be reduced. Students can be better prepared for the classes, as they would already know what would be taught the next day."
The academy will also introduce an instant messaging system for the instructors. This will allow the cadets to get information on any changes in the time table or rescheduling of a guest lecture immediately.
The introduction of this new system of learning is certainly a novel one for the academy and will go a long way in benefitting the cadets, reducing their time in taking notes and concentrating more in the classes.
