Aerospace and Development Sector: Vacancy but Lack Of Skills
BENGALURU: Aerospace and Defense sector is most preferred among all job seekers. For the progress of the A&D industry, the most essential resource needed is skilled engineers from all the engineering disciplines. In India engineering students graduate every year in lakhs and even jobs are also available in these sectors. But the issue at hand is lack of skills required in the engineers.
India is facing a problem with engineering graduates lacking the practical skills applicable to the manufacturing industry. In case of Aerospace and Defense, this issue reaches even a higher level. Lots of months are being spent on training these engineers and improving their skills. To achieve the aim of exporting defense products, India needs to work on this issue quiet seriously.
Dr, G. Raj Narayan, founder and MD of Radel Group and Chief Mentor of DRONA said, “The A&D sector needs specialized skills to cater to its unique requirements. A&D products need to be extremely rugged, reliable and capable of withstanding the stringent and extreme tests that they need to undergo, to make them fit for use on platforms like fighter aircraft, warships, and tanks in a battle scenario. The entire A&D domain needs people trained to design and manufacture equipment that fulfils these needs.”
In recently held Aero India 2015, Bengaluru, minister of state for skill development and entrepreneurship Pratap Rudy said, “The Indian aerospace sector would need at least one million skilled workmen every year in the coming years.”
As per the survey of Aspiring Minds, only 4 to 7 percent of engineers are fit for the job in core engineering sectors. It has been reported that employers are satisfied with the fresh graduates. According to the survey of Manpower group, engineers and technicians are the second and fourth most difficult employees to be hired, worldwide, respectively.
As An answer to this problem, Narayan added, “The solution is specialized training. There has been a lot of emphasis of late, on 'Skilling India.' Most of the initiatives under this program are focused on skilling the workforce at the technician level—electrician, machine operator, etc. We need to make our engineering graduates skilled not only in manufacturing but also in design. We need to not just Make in India, but Create in India, Design in India and Innovation India.”
