World University Rankings 2015-16: 17 Indian varsities among top 800

BENGALURU: Times Higher Education magazine is out with a comprehensive list of 800 best universities on a global platform. No Indian institute made it to the top 200 places and the first entry among Indian colleges is made by Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore placed at 251, reports Rediff.

Other Indian universities that bagged places among these 800 include Punjab University, IIT Bombay, IIT Roorkee and IIT Madras. Their ranks vary between 250 to 500.

Considering research intensive universities, and on the basis of 13 indicators the list used to be made of 400. This time the number doubled to 800. 

Grounds that were taken as parameters to rank the educational instates are :

Teaching (the learning environment) -- 30 percent

Research (volume, income and reputation) -- 30 percent

Citations (research influence) -- 30 per cent

International outlook (staff, students and research) -- 7.5per cent

Industry income (knowledge transfer) -- 2.5 percent

The Times list starts with California Institute of Technology at first and has seven American universities among the top ten. China dominates the list while Japan and Korea fall back in the game.
