Skills and Values Every Entrepreneur Must Nurture

BENGALURU: Entrepreneurship is all about taking the brave move to impart life to your idea. The greatest entrepreneurs we’ve known are not people who single handedly drove to the top. It is practically impossible to master in all the skillets required to get things going. Yet, it is the entrepreneur who imparts the life force that drives their venture. They perhaps enforce the following values and skills.

Patience is a virtue: Those setting off motivated by the hype of entrepreneurship and its fame lack patience, and are more likely to become poor leaders. Patience helps to sail through the chaos of differences, conflicts and failures; scenarios that all endeavors face. It enables leaders to learn, assess and get clearer vision for overcoming inevitable hurdles and is as important to entrepreneurship as breaks are to a vehicle.

Communication serves as the steering wheel:  From expressing the idea on paper, pitching it to investors, developing the team, streamlining the processes…to all aspects of the venture. Communication is the must have skill for an entrepreneur. It is not about being an introvert or extrovert, but the ability to convey the vision. Listening is as important as speaking. And writing is a skill that anyone could nurture with practice for it being a part of communication which is in turn an aspect that human species evolved to excel at.

Ego is no good for an entrepreneur There are few experts in the realm of entrepreneurship; for it is learning cum feedback loop. Expertise comes at the expense of mistakes. As the saying goes, “Fools learn from their mistakes, the wise learn from other’s mistakes.” Never hesitate to consult the experts whose mistakes led them to success in their endeavor or entirely derailed it. Be humble, it is the key to room for improvement. Are you an introvert? It is still no good reason to not foster team work and collaborations.

Familiarize coding:  Stories of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates might lead you to think coding is a must for starting off ventures in IT and Computer Sector. While it is not necessary to know coding, learning it helps develop logical thinking. Having a basic understanding of programming would help integrating ventures with IT more easily, which is a necessity given there are few sectors which does not require IT services. Don’t know coding at all? Don’t worry, ignore this point and go materializing your idea. You can grasp it along the way.

Follow your passion: Entrepreneurship shouldn’t be misunderstood as a term for making quick money as portrayed by the ongoing hype. It is about following your passion which makes the journey more worthwhile in addressing an innovation at an area one is passionate about. Generally it takes a pretty long time before ventures begin to generate revenue. Being passionate help earn confidence and satisfaction of holding on even at the time of hardship.

Grasping these skills would build confidence: Understanding basics of accounting, SEO optimization, General finance and compliance laws, design, coding and writing as mentioned earlier would help starting off rather independently. After all, it is curiosity that attracts mentorship. They could also serve as a means to generate revenue via freelancing that could aid the venture or serve as financial support during incubation.
