Remarkable! 769 Students Refuse To Join IITs
Bangalore: The unthinkable has happened, approximately 769 students who got an opportunity to study at the country’s elite institute, the IITs, decided not to take admissions. This incident is first of its kind and it seems that the IITs are losing its sheen among students, said a report by TNN.
This is also the first time when seats of general category found no takers. Earlier, only the seats meant for the reserved category were up for grabs after the initial rounds.
As per the report, there are two reasons behind this dejection. One is getting allotments in not-so-popular streams, while the other reason is the lack of confidence in the new IITs.
HC Gupta, Chairman of JEE (Advanced), said that, he is optimistic that the seats will get filled in the second round, which will start on 10th of July.
Before the second round of admissions, students who took admission were offered internal betterment. Under this, if a student with a ranking of 1,100 refused to take the allotted seat, another individual with a lower rank will get that place, provided the student opted for that subject in the preference form.
The report also revealed that, though there were vacant seats in every IIT, ISM-Dhanbad recorded the highest vacancies. But, all -is not gloomy in the first round of allotments for the current year; IT-BHU (now an IIT) that previously saw no takers presently has very little vacancies, which is a positive sign.
