People With Both Math And Social Skills Earn More: Study
BANGALORE: Are you good at math? Do you also get along well with people? If your answer is a ‘Yes’ to both of these questions, then your set to earn more money than ever before, reports Emmie Martin of Business Insider.
A recent study from the University of California, Santa Barbara, found that the return on being good at math has gone up over the last few decades, so as the return on having high social skills such as leadership, communication, and other interpersonal skills. Additionally, both these skills saw higher earnings over a 20-year period than individuals with only one set of skills.
To arrive at this conclusion, the study authors compared the earnings over time of, male high-school seniors from the class of 1972 as against the class of 1992, with special focus on their maths scores from standardized tests during their senior years, participation in sports, leadership roles, as well as individual earnings seven years after graduation.
The researchers later looked at only individuals whose men test scores and participation levels remained stable over a prolonged period, whereas education and access to extracurricular activities changed over this period for women and other people. . Additionally, they also considered participation in sports and clubs as social skills because these activities typically involve teamwork and communication, and provided a stable stats to arrive at a conclusion.
High maths scores, leadership positions, and a college education, all of this resulted in higher earnings between 1979 and 1999. However, the trend for higher earnings was strongest among those who were both good at maths and engaged in sports or leadership activities.
So without any denial, being good at maths or working well with others was linked with higher-than-average earnings, but possessing both qualities resulted in even higher-earnings.
