Osmania University on a High; Records the Highest Foreign Student Turnout
Bangalore: The recent turmoil surrounding Telangana seems to have no impact on the admissions in the Osmania University (OU), which is a premier institution in the heartland of newly formed state. OU recorded one of the highest foreign student turnouts for admission this season, reports TNN.
The university witnessed 1,450 new foreign student entries this year, which is approximately 13.8 percent higher compared to the previous year. As per the senior officials in the institution, students from West Asia and East Africa formed the major chunk of the entries, while countries such as Iraq, Sudan and Afghanistan had small representations.
B.Com, M.Sc and MA were the most sought after courses this term. M.Sc saw 245 foreign student admissions, MA witnessed 135 entries, whereas, B.Com and BBM garnered 201 and 111 admissions respectively.
A major chunk (312) of the students who bagged admissions this year are those with ICCR fellowships.
Language training was also one of the most sought after commodity among foreign students. Consequently the one-year English certificate courses offered by the university were selling like hot cakes.
The officials also expect the rate of foreign student turnout to swell in the coming years, especially from Gulf and African nations. G B Reddy, Director, foreign relations office, was quoted saying in an interview to TNN that, "A separate hostel for international students has opened this year. This is expected to bring in more students from other countries".
