Need Of The Hour Is Job-Led Growth, Says PM Adviser S Ramadorai
New Delhi: Stating that there is a mismatch between supply and demand when it comes to skilled manpower, the Adviser to the Prime Minister on Skills S Ramadorai said the need of the hour is 'job led growth'.
"Even as we think of skills, we must match them with jobs. In a country with with over 600 million people in the working age group, the need of the hour is job led growth," Chairman of National Skills Development Corporation and Adviser to the Prime Minister on Skills S Ramadorai said at a CII event .
Observing that the current educational system was not adequate to serve the needs of the country, Ramadorai said there was a need to adopt Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) to provide high quality education.
Ramadorai called upon the industry to adopt a leadership role in promoting skill development in the country, and asked private sector to allow their employees to volunteer to train people in various skills.
The event saw unveiling of the India Skills Report 2014, which said: "If India continues in the current direction, we would be have a skill gap of 75 to 80 percent across industry sectors."
Stating that rigorous steps are needed to tackle this challenge are the need of the hour, the report called for combined efforts from several stakeholders as a solution to this talent conundrum.
The report assessed about 1,00,000 students on 244 domain areas and skill gaps, which were validated using reliable talent assessment tools.
On the demand side, about 100 employers, spread across 10 major sectors like manufacturing, BFSI, and ITES/IT were surveyed to get the job demand and potential hiring forecasts for the coming year.
