The survey was carried out by UDISE and data was analyzed by the Delhi based National University for Educational Administration and Planning. In several states the situation is much worse than what the national average indicates. For instance in Karnataka, just 6 percent of schools have fully equipped labs for senior students, while in Andhra Pradesh and also in many other south Indian states, the share is a mere 13 percent. In Assam, just 4 percent schools have labs while in West Bengal the share of such schools is only 6 percent.

According to the report, 43 percent of schools offer science stream to senior students where over 5.4 million students study science. That's more than one third of the total students covered in the survey. Note that these students are spread over all the schools.

In rural areas due to lack of science facilities students are forced, to abandon any dreams of studying science. But the students learning in class 9 and 10 seems to be at a better level when compared to senior students. But considering that the integrated science paper is compulsory at this level, this improved situation is illusory. More than half the students of classes 9 and 10 are learning science without labs.
