Lenovo to Downsize Employee Number in Motoroloa's Smartphone Division
BENGALURU: Lenovo has planned to sack close to 2 Pct of 55,000 employees across the globe in Motorola’s Moto smartphone business. However, the company has nowhere officially mentioned the number of employees losing the job. It was first reported by Droid-Life stating that 50 per cent of the 1200 jobs at Motorola’s mobile phone division could be cut.
Lenovo later asserted in a press release that the decision of downsizing were a part of the reorganization efforts between Lenovo and Motorola, as it tries to streamline product portfolio in the smartphone segment. Lenovo laid-off over 3000 jobs last year on October.
Lenovo purchased Motorola Mobility business from Google, acquiring complete control of Motorola’s smartphone business by paying close to $2.91 billion in January 2014. In 2011 Google had paid nearly $12.5 billion to takeover Motorola.
Lenovo made a pact with an aim of expanding the business in North America, Latin America and Western Europe, where Motorola remains to be cult in the smartphone business. Moreover, while promoting Moto Z Mods smartphones in the US, Lenovo took a dig at iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 series through Motorola’s ads.
Motorola series became popular in India with Moto G, Moto E smartphones. However, they couldn’t break through the premium segment, although Lenovo expects to accomplish that with the new Moto Z and Mods.
Lenovo has created a road map and developed different strategies in other areas of the business in order to manage costs, drive efficiency and boost financial performance. In the smartphone market, where each day new competitors are mushrooming, the road to accomplish success is never easy; it requires constant efforts to ensure long-term, profitable growth in the business.
