Lack of Skills In Job Market: Fact or Fiction?

BENGALURU: In the year 2020, India would be globally recognized as the youngest country in the world and will be averagely 29 years old. According to the E&Y- FICCI report, another episode would co-exist with this where the country would constitute 28 percent of the total world’s workforce, reports Business Insider.

Jobs and Skills These reports unveil that the pool of dexterity of Indian job seekers either lack the required eligible proficiency and expertise or these candidates fail to flag their availability due to incompetent job market.

According to these reports, a meager 34 percent of the total graduates in the nation are available for employment. And as per the Census data, September 2013, 63.4 percent of the nation’s population comprises of the working age section. Another report by NSDC suggests that 12 million employees are hired every year. The employees can be categorized as highly proficient, partially skillful or unskilled. The greatest part of these employees belongs to the unskilled category.

In addition to this, survey by Aspiring Minds disclose that owing to the inefficiency in English language, lack of understanding of computers and deficiency at grasping the role of their jobs  account for 47 percent of the graduates not being employed anywhere.

The best way out of this scenario is to introduce vocational training in the graduation programme to enhance their soft skills. As new technologies are introduced in the economy every other day, government is motivated to set up learning sessions for the employee to acquaint them the latest trends and skills. These educational programmes are expected to yield good results thereby producing skillful employees.

Manufacturing and Technical jobs are the prime sectors where the absence of skills is witnessed. However, the lack of skill is exaggerated in the service sector of Indian economy as attempts are in process where the low-end white- collar workers are taken under training to polish their skills and make them available to the job market for the appropriate job. More often than not, the unproductive market for job is at fault.
