BENGALURU: Generation Gap issue in Indian workforce is very much visible and the preference weighs towards the younger generation. As this issue has got hype in the corporate world, industry experts say that it is high time that India should maintain equilibrium of age while recruiting, reports, TOI.

A survey on middle and senior level executives of seven industries was conducted by Executive Access Research Group. The survey reflected that 45 percent of the workforce lies between 30 to 40 years of age. The age differs from industrial and infrastructural industries to consumer and technology industries. An industry should host age diversity in its work environment that means ability to accept different types of ages within the company.

Srimathi Shivashankar, associate VP of diversity and sustainability at HCL technologies, said “Generational diversity is here to stay in India. Ten years ago, the average age of an IT worker in India was 23, and now it is 29 years. As industries mature, so will the workforce from the generational diversity perspective.”

PepsiCo India, chief HR officer, Samik Basu said that diversity is required to maintain a balance. He said, “Experience provides stability while fresh blood brings new ideas on the table.” Though PepsiCo India stands as a young organization with 50 percent of its employees within the age group of 30, but it seems that they value the importance of age diversity.

Innovations and ideas are making people realize how important generational diversity is. Ronesh Puri, MD of executive Access India said, “Companies are driving age diversity because they don't want clones. Diversity can bring about that mindset which is commanded by market realities today.”

Companies like PepsiCo, HCL are coming up with great efforts to establish age diversity in work places by having discussions and meetings and giving equal importance to all the ideas.
