IITs To Lower Bar, Admit Students From Weaker Sections

BANGALORE: Preserving the standards of IITs is an on-going task that seems to be picking up despite its challenges.  With last week’s incident of IIT-Rookie’s expulsion of 73 students for underperformance, the institution has now created a stir in which the elite institution shall soon have the bar lowered to admit students from the weaker sections, reports TOI.
To tackle the inability of upholding school education standards mainly for the underprivileged,   the IITs will be taking in students with scores as low as 31 out of 504, or a 6.1 pct in order to fill vacant seats . Due to the Subjective components found  in the JEE (Advanced) 2015 question paper that utilized a higher negative marking, making it tougher this year round, to offer stability lowering the bar for qualifying in the general category  between 35pct  to 24.5pct, while the cut-offs  for  the reserved category was brought down to 12.25pct.

Furthermore, even with these measures obtaining a seat in these categories is still expected to be difficult, hence further reductions in qualifying marks will be made to bring in a third category of students. This third category of students must hold a minimum of 6.1 pct at least for which they will be sent for a preparatory course.
According to a report from TOI, the first round of seat allocation had left 591 sears vacant  while the majority of them were reserved for students in PwD (people with disabilities) and ST (scheduled tribes) categories. As said by an IIT director, they said last position of seat vacancies will be based after the third round; he also hinted that IITs must follow up with the constitutional reservation as per the law.

The preparatory course will be a year coaching programming that includes subjects like physics, mathematics and chemistry; this is scheduled for reserved category candidates who do not make the cut for the entrance.  The total number for the preparatory courses will is not go more than 10 in most institutes

He added that quotas needed to be supplemented with stronger schooling, especially for the weaker sections of society.
