BENGALURU: Net Neutrality or Net Equality is a loud and clear issue burning in the minds of common people. Even senior faculty members of top educational institutes IIT and IISc have also come forward in support of these claims against TRAI, reports TOI.

Almost 50 faculty members from India’s top institutions have generated a joint statement registering arguments in TRAI’s consultation paper that focuses on the fact that why Net Neutrality must be compromised or weakened. The members raising their voice include Bhaskaran Raman, professor Of DSE department, IIT Bombay, Jayanti Haritsa Dept of CSA, IISc Bangalore and Amitabha Bagchi, Dept of CS and E, IIT Delhi.

The statement raised by these members namely includes particular technical aspects of digital networks that demands the establishment of Net Neutrality.

First of all, it discusses the TRAI’s argument to violate Net Neutrality to solve congestion in the network. It mentioned, “For instance, it would be well within the principles of net neutrality to serve the first GB of a user's data fast, and the second GB of data slower. The second GB can also be priced higher.”

The statement from the above mentioned faculties also included the TRAI’s argument that Net Neutrality must be violated in order to provide service differentiation. The statement said, “Network neutrality does not mean there is no service differentiation. It means that the choice for better service is made by the end customer, not by the network.”

The statement also emphasized on the issue of how Net Neutrality is important for Internet Architecture. It said, “The internet architecture is essentially one where intelligence is pushed to the edge of the network: these are the content servers as well as the clients of these services at the other edge of the network (the Smartphones and laptops and PCs).”

At the end of the statement, they referred TRAI Consultation paper to be misleading and confusing in both title and terminology and pointed out the confusing use of the term ‘over the top’ repeatedly. It mentioned, “Sure, one has to use the road to reach the school, but the term OTT suggests that the road somehow has a role in the school's education service over and above just using the road to reach the school.”
