Google Builds Startup Incubator to Promote In-House Talent
BENGALURU: Recently, former Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Head, Regina Dugan left Google for Facebook. She was running the Advanced Technologies and Projects (ATAP) lab at Google. Having lost few of its valuable employees, Google strategically plans to make sure that their top talents do not leave for startups and is taking effective measures. The firm aims to build an in-house startup incubator internally known as Area 120, reports Firstpost.
Google wants to leverage the great ideas of its employees to create the next big Google product. Once the business plan is drafted, employees will submit their work project and propose various innovative ideas. The teams who are instrumental will then be allowed to work full-time on their projects for a set timeframe to develop a proof of concept. In the end of the program, Google will give their employees the choice of starting their own company, which will be funded by Google.
The history behind the name ‘Area 120’ is said to be acquired from the famous “20 percent time” philosophy that Google follows, wherein it asks employees to invest 20 percent of their time in something they like. Through this smart move, the company proves that it has the ability to motivate employees to work on their ideas and retain it, rather than losing their talent.
This incubation group created is in line with the vision of Google's new parent company, Alphabet. Initially Alphabet was founded on the principle of promoting entrepreneurs and investing in great companies. Google now envisions it through this program as it inspires new startups as well as keeps them next to home. It is also specified that this incubator will be run by longtime Google executives Don Harrison and Bradley Horowitz, as reported by a tech-industry news website, The Information.
