Flipkart Redefines Hiring Process, Recruits Nanodegree Graduates

BANGALORE: India’s ecommerce, Flipkart’s recent partnership with Udacity, an online learning platform will let the online retailer recruit graduates skilled under the Udacity's Nanodegree programmes, reports ET. The partnership is aimed on changing the hiring process in the software space that depends completely on the referrals and personal interviews.

A breakthrough the conventional system of hiring, Flipkart skipped personal interviews or group exercises and recruited candidates with the best Nanodegree projects and Udacity profiles instead. The new concept of hiring saved the recruiter’s time wasted in interviewing the candidates yet enabled them to hire the required talent.

Three students have already been hired and have joined Flipkart’s mobile team. They were amongst the first Udacity's Android Developer Nanodegree graduates to have joined the ecommerce giant and more of recruitment between the two companies is expected to follow.

"The kind of disruptive work that we do at Flipkart demands a world-class talent pool and we are constantly on the lookout for experts who can solve the problems of Indian consumers. The conventional hiring process often comes down to the performance of the candidate on that specific day, which may not be a true reflection of their skills and temperament. This is where a partner like Udacity comes into the picture," said Peeyush Ranjan, chief technology officer, Flipkart.

"We met them a few months ago with our case and wanted to try out this new space. The shortlisted profiles provided by them and the in-depth data we received were very helpful and allowed us to assess the candidate's competencies in a much better way," he added.

"Our goal is to have our Nanodegree graduates be in demand for the jobs of today like mobile, data analyst, web development and machine learning, among others," said Sebastian Thrun, co-founder and CEO of Udacity.

With mobile ecommerce space heating up, there is a shortage of talented developers to be met. As per Internet & Mobile Association of India, the nation has 50,000 to 70,000 developers and requires nearly 20 Mn by 2020. Recruiters are presently looking for candidates skilled and updated with the latest Android technology helping them get ahead of their rivals in technological dimension.

The online courses offered by Udacity’s Nanodegree is built by industry biggies like Google, Facebook, Cloudera and Amazon that helps the graduates get updated with the latest technological skills prevailing in the industry. The graduates from the program have successfully landed themselves in jobs at Google, AT&T, Intuit, Goldman Sachs, Nest and Flipkart.
