Facebook to Skip Placement at IITs Due to Limited H-1B Visas
Bangalore: As suggested by IIT placement cells ,Facebook, which is noted as one of the best paymasters in engineering campuses is expected to give a slip to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) for this year in regards to both internship and final placement, reports ET.
However, this is not due to the lack of need for Indian engineering talent but mainly because of limited H-1B visas given out to the companies lent out by the U.S. a minimum of five IITs affirmed that the facebook headquartered in Menlo Park, California, will not make a trip to them this year.
In the previous year, the online social networking services had made several offers at these three institutes with salaries as high as Rs 2 crore for designation of software engineers in California.
Although Facebook refused to comment a sources close to the company had revealed that the visa problems was prevalent last year as well. It has thus turned the company to consider to position its IIT recruitment at the UK for at least a good year before obtaining visas in its place for the U.S.
The present quota for H1B visas is around 65,000 that are depleted within a couple of days before the annual allocation becomes accessible at the starting of April every year. U.S. firmly requires talent in technology, science, engineering and mathematics (STEM) which is expected to rise up to a million by the year 2020.
Shivendra Singh, VP, NASSCOM said "Considering that a million of STEM workers would be needed by the US in some years, they are likely to fall short by almost 50 pct. India has a good supply of talent in this space, which also includes the young IITians.
