Abroad Studies: Top Choice Among Young Indian Students
BANGALORE: In what could be a drastic development, the number of Indian students choosing to study abroad is rapidly growing, especially among the class 12 students. The lack of quality institutions and the reservation system in India are seen as the major reason for such large scale migration is students to countries like U.S. and UK.
According to a study conducted by Indian Institute of Management, Indian students in the age group of 16 to 17 are seeking for more details about the foreign universities and opting to study in countries like United States, Australia, Britain and the Middle East .
Lack of global exposure, higher cut-offs, competitiveness of admission into a good Indian university, and corruption in the education system, are some of the others reasons behind this latest development. It was also said that with half of Indian’s 1.2 billion population aged under 25, competition is fierce to what it was some years back.
The study also reveled that every year around 90 percent students go abroad to pursue UG courses, and of the 90 percent of students, 80 percent go to U.S. Apart from pursuing UG courses in science and technology, some students are also going to foreign universities to pursue courses liberal arts.
With the consequent growth of the middle class families the parents of these students are now willing to pay international tuition fees and head abroad with U.S. being the top choice.
It is also said that Indian students account for 12 percent of all foreign students in the United States, second only to China.
