Most of us would get goosebumps by just thinking about this but when Europe was suffering from massive rat infestations, this job was a booming career option back then. As rats were often carriers of disease, individuals who carried out these jobs ran into high risks of suffering from bites and infections, but used to make sure that they helped prevent diseases from spreading in the public.
Lamplighter
Before electric lamps were introduced to most cities, the street lamps were fueled by gas and to light these lamps up in the dawn, lamplighters were used. As these lights were lit each evening, generally by means of a wick on a long pole and in return get paid for the work done.
In the 19th century, gas lights became the dominant form of street lighting, but today a lamplighter is an extremely rare job and you can find these lamplighters in a tourist attraction or on a shopping street.
