Employers typically ask  this question to see if your way of life interferes with work schedules, but it is deemed illegal by law. In fact by asking these questions, the employers may also run into big trouble legally.
However, it is legal to ask applicants if they can read, write or speak foreign languages that are related to performing the job duties. It is also acceptable to ask applicants if they can submit a birth certificate, proof of citizenship, or work permit only after they are hired but not in the interview process. After the hiring process, it is permitted to ask for their personal details only if the information wants be documented as a part of company statistics.
Religion
A jovial question related to the religion that you follow may be allowed, but it is illegal to ask about an applicant’s religious denomination or affiliation, or to ask about the religious holidays or customs that they observe. In addition, it is also illegal to ask the applicant to obtain a letter of recommendation from their past or religious leader. However, an interviewer can inform the applicant of the typical workdays and hours of the job.
Disabilities
Last but not the least, did you know that asking job applicants whether they disease prone could land you in trouble because it is illegal to ask about the cause or gravity of their disability, according to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
However, it must be made clear that revealing this information is completely voluntary, and remain confidential. An interviewer has the right to only ask how the applicant can safely perform the required job duties with the disability and what help could be rendered from their side, if the interviewer is considering the person for the open position.
