6 Ways for Women Techies to Beat the Odds
BANGALORE: Techie men are more successful than techie women. Is it a myth or truth? Whatever it is, there is a common perception that technology is a men’s field of study and not women. If this is true how can women prove that statement wrong? Here are six ways, mentioned in Economic Times, through which women can overcome their career challenges.
Shobha Agarwal, Vice PresidentStrategy Implementation, and Chief Risk Officer, Nihilent, told TimesJobs.com that, “nothing special or specific is required of a woman to be a successful tech professional. What applies to women will apply to men too.” What Shobha says applies to all the women in the tech world.
If you are a woman and think that technology is not a field meant for women, here are these six things you could do to succeed. Neelam Salaria, Senior Project Manager, Blue Star Infotech, Deepika Pillai, Head-HR, Xavient Information Systems and Shobha compiled these together:
First and foremost treat yourself equal to and on par with the men. Stay clear of the gender platform.. This will help you focus on the work a lot better than ever.
Secondly, build a favorable and strong support system both at work and home. Most women have to quit their jobs as they reach their critical phases in career due to marriage and children. Do not let womanhood be a barrier to excel at work. Learn to negotiate with family and at work.
Thirdly, move out of your comfort zone and keep your doors open to learn more. Be bold enough to take up challenging projects which can demonstrate your technical abilities.
Fourthly, stay updated with emerging trends so that you are equipped to take advantages of the opportunities as they arise. Do not let inefficiency be a reason for you to lose bright chances.
Next, be a leader and take initiatives to represent the organization, team or projects whenever possible. Showcase your strengths without hesitation.
Lastly, make efforts to develop your networking skills, contribute and participate in cross-functional, cross-organizational projects so as to diversify your expertise in other networks. This can fill up the knowledge gaps and accelerate your future opportunities.
