5 Years On, New IITs Still Struggle to Match the Biggies

Speaking about the faculty crunch and other issues at the new IITs, a first-year student at IIT-Jodhpur said that, "Many a times, we are being taught by PhD students. Often, a professor specializing in one subject is forced to teach multiple subjects of which he would have little knowledge. Our campus is defined only by a boundary wall. The placement is also not very appreciable".

Students also claim that the infrastructure at the new IITs is not up the mark and in the words of a student, "For all purposes, these are temporary campuses. Our institute lacks proper space for classrooms, labs, library, sporting facilities and even hostels".

On a positive note, Sanjay Govind Dande, former director of IIT-Kanpur, expressed optimism about the new IITs. He claimed that it way too early to condemn or criticize the new IITs and added that, "Even the old IITs took almost five decades to prove their worth. Bringing a systematic change in the old IITs to tackle fresh challenges was a tough task. The new ones should deal with the problems with fresh ideas and initiatives".
