Bangalore: The union government’s move to establish eight new IITs seems to have not gone as planned. Rather than grooming the future leaders of the country, these institutions have fallen prey to various issues starting from faculty crunch to not-so-impressive placements to lack of permanent campuses, and are degrading the brand value of the IITs, reports Ramendra Singh of TNN.  

As per a RTI reply secured from the HRD ministry recently, the new IITs have been plagued by the lack of proper student-faculty ration. IIT-Jodhpur and IIT-Mandi are the worst hit. They are forced to function at nearly half of their faculty strength, as out of the 90 available posts in each of the institutions, only 48 and 49 are filled. Apart from IIT-Hyderabad, which has managed to nearly fill its quota of 105 posts, rest of the other institutes, namely IIT-Ropar, IIT-Patna, IIT-Bhubaneshwar, IIT-Gandhinagar and IIT-Indore are facing the same issue.
