IIT Kanpur was established with an aim to provide meaningful education, to conduct genuine research of the highest quality, to provide direction to the technological innovation and support the industrial growth of the country. The institution began functioning in 1959 and initially had a very modest beginning. It started functioning with about 100 students and a small faculty. This varsity now has a huge residential campus with about 309 faculties and in excess of 900 supporting staff. Currently, approximately 3,400 undergraduates and 2000 postgraduates are studying in this educational institute.

IIT Kanpur is the first institute to offer computer science education within the shores of the country. And much like the earlier times the institution is creating history by being a hub of a number of mindboggling innovations in both research and curriculum, and is swiftly gaining a celebrated reputation.
